Fantastic Accessory for my Aero Gardens

Review Date: October 14, 2009

The mount is a bit cumbersome with the large screws, but if you use smaller screws and washers it works fantastic and easily holds the weight. Fantastic setup and works fantastic even with highest setting on Aero Gardens.
Perfect space saver

Product arrived quick and in excellent condition. Instructions were simple to follow. Note-since this does hold three units, it is necessary to make sure you install brackets into solid wood studs or comparable material.
3-Shelf Aerogarden fm Amazon.com (cr)

I'm really perplexed about why there are so few reviews on the Aerogarden -3 shelf Wall Garden (A3SWG). I could only find two reviews
on the A3SWG -- and they are repeated over multiple web retail sites. Odd. My buy was made on Amazon.com - and since my buy, delivery and eventual use of the product were without problem, without my written permission, this review may not be duplicated in part or in it's entirety. I've owned and used the 3-shelf Wall Garden for over 2 months now. Installation is made really simple with the use of the paper template included with the A3SWG. I plot to laminate that template in case I ever want to relocate my A3SWG. For installation, I used a power drill, a pencil, a long 4 ft level (may or may not be needed) and a stud finder. The A3SWG is a honestly heavy weight metal product. In fact, if you're considering purchasing one, you might want to get it before some bean-counter at AeroGrow convinces the right executive that it would be cheaper to make large parts of the A3SWG from some cute but brittle plastic. Right now, the backing or covers are like a brushed stainless steel. The A3SWG must be installed through a stud because it's pretty heavy. Despite what it looks like in the photos online, each shelf is really a separate bracket that must be screwed into a stud
Then METAL covers connect to the front of the brackets to make the backing look seamless. I have 3 gardens in a small home so, the A3SWG really saves valuable horizontal space and serves as an an attractive light source during the nighttime hours. The other fantastic feature is that the A3SWG doesn't look overly feminine (excellent job designers). The adult men I know aren't into decorating or "cute things". When I show off a photo of my wall garden in place they without fail do a double take and say "hey -- that looks pretty excellent! Where'd you get that?" The A3SWG has a metro look but it's also quite gorgeous (this womans perspective). It's just as they describe it -- just make sure you have open space OVER A VERTICAL STUD 7 ft or so for 3 shelves or about 4.5-5 ft for the 2 shelf option. Oh and if you're thinking that you can break it down into 3 separate shelves -- you can, but! the A3SWG doesn't come with enough covers or caps (see top of unit in photo) to make a seamless backdrop for each shelf. It would leave some exposed wires without some other way to cover them. The A3SWG is designed and delivered to work with 2 shelves or 3 shelves. One last thing -- I got lucky and bought mine at $99 with free super saver shipping -- but $139 is not an outrageous price. Pleased Aerogardening!
Attractive, secure, and simple to install

This unit looks attractive in most decor. The power cords are MOSTLY (except at the bottom) concealed behind the vertical shield, and it comes with a really convenient installation template that you merely have to tape at the top to a excellent spot on the wall and along the sides. Place some clear duct tape folded over the paper on the top of the template and along the tape spots along the sides, because you will want to save it.

For all but the handiest person, installation will be a two person job, because one person will need to hold the shelves while the other sets the screws. Small persons may need a step stool or ladder to measure and securely reach the highest point.

If you have a bubble level, pencil, tape, and screwdriver or electric drill and can find a stud, you can do this. The only real challenges are locating the horizontal center of the stud (probably the trickiest) and missing the nailheads in the stud with your screws (luck -- I missed 3 out of 5).

The shelves are heavy duty cast metal alloy with an attractive shiny surface -- more of a molded aluminum alloy than a stainless look, so you will want to clean the fingerprints you leave on them off before you place the Aerogardens on them. They are specifically molded exactly to the Aerogarden bottom contours, so they hold them securely AND no pet or child is going to accidentally knock one off, nor will an Aerogarden vibrate off a shelf.

I gave it only 4 stars because it ships with the worst screws I have ever seen for stripping. They did not fit any of my various bits particularly well and no matter which drill or electric screwdriver I used, the screw resistance going into a stud was so fantastic that the heads wanted to strip just before I got them fully in the wall. Once I realized you can't see the screw heads behind the wire shield, I went and replaced them with nice stainless hex head screws and there was no problem.

Best advice, when you get the set is to take the screws down to your hardware store and replace them with hex head screws of the same length. That will cut the installation time and headache considerably.

One other thing, is that BEFORE you attach the included power strip for the power plugs of the up-to-three Aerogardens, be sure and force the plugs into them while you have them in your hands and can apply the necessary force. This powerstrip had the tightest plugs I have ever seen, and once it was installed I was worried to apply the force necessary to set the plugs.

Our friends all reckon my wife's Aerogardens look fantastic in our kitchen. They form a nice conversation piece, and now we have tomatoes, herbs, and the best-tasting and most tender lettuce I have ever tasted right there in the kitchen and ready to go. Unless you just have a lot of extra counter space, this is the way to go, but save that template and the instructions in case you have to take it down when you repaint or you wish to go it.

Overall design is brilliant in keeping with the nice design and manufacturing standards of the Aerogarden itself. We have the black Aerogardens, and it looks fantastic with them, but I am also sure it would with the white. I see no reason why someone who had more of a traditional kitchen design could not paint over the silver vertical cord shield and blend it into their decor better.

Product Description

The decline of cheap oil is inspiring increasing numbers of North Americans to achieve some measure of backyard food self-sufficiency. In hard times, the family can be greatly helped by growing a highly productive food garden, requiring small cash outlay or watering.

Currently well loved intensive vegetable gardening methods are largely inappropriate to this new circumstance. Crowded raised beds require high inputs of water, fertility and organic matter, and demand large amounts of human time and effort. But, except for labor, these inputs depend on the price of oil. Prior to the 1970s, North American home food growing used more land with less labor, with wider plant spacing, with less or no irrigation, and all done with sharp hand tools. But these sustainable systems have been largely forgotten. Gardening When It Counts helps readers rediscover traditional low-input gardening methods to produce healthy food.

Designed for readers with no experience and applicable to most areas in the English-speaking world except the tropics and hot deserts, this book shows that any family with access to 3-5,000 sq. ft. of garden land can halve their food costs using a growing system requiring just the odd bucketful of household waste water, perhaps two hundred dollars worth of hand tools, and about the same amount spent on supplies - working an average of two hours a day during the growing season.

Steve Solomon is a well-known west coast gardener and author of five previous books, including Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades which has appeared in five editions.
