Product Description |
|
Just a few steps from your kitchen door, on a patio or deck, you can now plant three different tomato varieties. This tree of tomatoes will grow five feet in diameter, six foot high, and yield between 150 and 200 tomatoes (based on average yields). If you grow the cherry-type tomatoes, the yield will be hundreds and hundreds of tasty salad tomatoes. Mix and match tomatoes (for instance, one yellow, one red, one cherry size, etc.) You can even grow fresh herbs, zukes, eggplant or a variety of peppers.

They have improved

I read the other reviews and had to mention they must have improved. It has a drainage system now at the bottom of the "bag" which also helps support the weight of the bag. Yes, one of the "port holes" came disassembled, but not to where I couldn't get the sponge in place to support the tomatoe plant and prevent dirt from coming out.
I do have to say, you need to remove your tomato plants from the soil they come packed in...loosen the roots up so it will fit through the holes. No huge deal really. It has been 1 week and so far my tomato plants are growing strong and hardy. Also I am watering every day, careful to not drown them.
Thus far, it is very functional and efficient. |
works okay but

| I found that the planter worked just fine but I only got one season out of the bag and it's shot. At this point I haven't found a replacement for it. My tomatoes grew fantastic and the best thing is no weeds and no ants. |

I bought this on qvc and was later called and told that there was a re-call as it would fall over. My husband place the pole in an ancient flag pole hole and it works. Would check re-call out as they say it falls over.

Hard to assemble and use
|
| Review Date: June 9, 2007 |
| Reviewer: E. A. Lovitt, Gladwin, MI USA |
The metal parts of the tomato tree are quite brittle, and even though we followed instructions and used a rubber mallet when fitting together the lower part of the tree, a piece of metal broke away from the assembly holding the legs in place.
Another problem showed up when I was trying to fit my tomato plants through the portholes--the plastic ring that fits around the portholes is cheaply made and kept falling into two parts as I was trying to pass my tomato root balls through the ring. This was extremely frustrating.
Finally, there is no way for water to escape from the plastic bag once you have watered your tomatoes. Watering has to be done very carefully to avoid rotting out the roots. Even cheap plastic pots from chain stores have drainage holes, so you'd reckon a relatively expensive product like this tomato tree would come equipped with them. No, it's 'poke your own.'
I had assumed from looking at the Tomato Tree in the catalogue that the bag could be rotated, so different plants could get the most sun. Not so. You will have to rotate the whole unit in order to ensure that your tomato plants get equal time in the sun. |
