How do i prep my vegetable garden for winter?
arcticbabe2006 questioned:
I planted my first garden this year and what a harvest i’m about to have! But, i’m not sure how to prep if for winter? we don’t get that much snow but we get some and it gets cold…do i pull out my tomato plants all together? pull everything out and turn soil? Any advice would be helpful …i still have some time before the first frost. Thanks!

i planted a garden this year as well and wish that i had such luck,as you the answer to your questions is if in doubt always remember to pick up an almanac, at the drug store it’s free or buy one from any store i hope this is some help!
Your plants that are tender annuals (like the tomatoes) should be removed when they stop producing and start to die, or at the first frost. Plants like brussells sprouts and cabbages will last longer, through the first few frosts (some people say they taste better after a frost).
Use the dead plants and fall leaves to start a compost pile if you don’t already have one. Cover the garden bed with a layer of compost and then cover that with a mulch of chopped leaves. Then next spring you can plant right through the mulch.
I don’t know what state you live in. I live in Los Angeles. We just canned 17 jars of tomatoes for the winter. I cut my tomatoes back. They will produce another crop before the winter. I don’t know if this will work in your state. My Vietnam bubby lives in Warren Pa., and He cannot cut back his tomatoes.
Now is a excellent time to plant garlic and onions for the fall. After Dec. i hit my garden with chicken manure. It is the best. Then I replant everything in the spring. Excellent luck.
