How to prepare a typical English garden for winter?

I have a medium sized typical English garden with Forsythia, Hydrangea, a few clipped Box bushes, Redcurrant bushes, Roses and a huge Cordyline palm. The grass is overlong but too wet to cut and also full of fallen leaves from next door’s tree. I’d like to do a final clean up before retiring till spring. Does anyone have any tips for getting the best out of my garden over winter. Also, are there any excellent bedding plants to add a splash of colour.

For color in the fall you can add mums, pansies and ornamental kale. Most plants like roses and hydrangea should not be trimmed at this time of year. Trimming may reduce blooming next year (hydrangea) or stimulate growth that will get zapped when it freezes (roses). I would try to get the grass cut and the leaves raked. You can mulch your plants for a clean look over the winter.
