If you are looking for a bird feeder that squirrels can not steal from, look elsewhere. Squirrels are smart, and I have one that figured out how to climb down the hanger and cling to the feeder upside down, helping himself to the bird seed. I guess I’ll have to try using a dome-shaped shield on the hanger and see if that helps. For now, I will try to keep the squirrels distracted by keeping an adequate supply of cheaper food on the ground where it is simpler to access. Also, if you are shopping for your first bird feeder, I recommend getting a smaller one to start out. This one has a much larger capacity than my birds consume in a reasonable time, so I end up dumping most of the food when it’s time to clean it and refill it with fresh food. Birds don’t like moldy food. They also don’t seem to like the cheaper seed blends that have a lot of milo and other cheap fillers, at least not here in upstate NY. It’s probably better to have a number of smaller feeders instead of one large feeder, anyway. Just hope you’re feeding the birds instead of the squirrels, or it can get expensive! Oh, I also read that squirrels don’t like thistle, so maybe I’ll get a thistle feeder as well. Not all birds like thistle, so a variety of feeders is a excellent thought. I would also like to get a suet feeder for a larger variety of backyard visitors, but squirrels like suet too.

I got one of these at the local W store for less than 20 bucks. For that price, and with the following fix it does a excellent job of decreasing the amount of seed eaten by the rodent members of our backyard.

I simply used some Gorilla tape (like duct tape only stronger) to tape over the bottom holes. This prevented the squirrels from shaking feeder and getting seeds to drop into the bottom tray (they can get a few, but not worth the effort). But, that makes it so that the bottom third of the feeder does not dispense food. The birds will stick their heads into the middle holes and get some of the food out, but.

If you do not want to spend a lot on a really squirrel proof feeder this will cut down a lot on the seed swiped.

Not sure where others use this feeder, but for a 2nd floor deck, this and the triple sized one are wonderful. Also, we live in a fully wooded area highly populated by squirrels and these drive them NUTS. They cannot figure out how to get at these. And believe me, the branches are close enough for them to jump onto the decks. We’ve had no issues filling the feeder or getting them to lock in place either. These are fantastic and really worth the investment.

Counting the two new Top-Flight birdfeeders I just bought, I have had 4 of these feeders. Got rid of the two I had (after 3 years) because I could no longer get them really clean. I delight in these, they are simple to fill and the birds like them. The only downfall to these feeders is they do collect some water at bottom. A baffle over the top cures this.
